Our dialup customers reach us by calling the number.  Their calls connect to a piece of our network gear model MAX4048 manufactured by Ascend.  The MAX 4048 product has two T1 interfaces with 48 digital modems.  The product combines the functionality of a router, a terminal server, an ISDN switch, and a frame relay concentrator.  Over the past week, customers have complained about “dead air” and dropped calls.  When a customer places a call, the caller sometimes gets no response, a fast busy signal, or, gets dropped from the line after successfully connecting.  After repeated attempts to connect, some customers have reported successfully connecting following multiple failures.
